Kalenjin musicians have anticipated for long for savior leaders
who mind of their total well-being who is ready to sit and listen their
pressing issues blocking their success.
It is undoubted that Southrift is home of famous secular and
gospel artistes who control the atmosphere with their melodious entertainment
used in radios, Televisions, cars and public gatherings but they still languish
in poverty.
An entrepreneur from Kericho Charles Langat (Chaglano) is
planning of a meeting with all musicians where he expects to hear their views,
plights and how they want assisted.
Recently I took time to trace Chepkemoi Kapchumbe lady who
hails from Transmara but lives in a small town in Kericho County.
It was on a chilly Sunday Morning when I made an impromptu
visit to the lady and found her resting in her simple single room.
From our conversation I learnt that her music career started
way back in the year 2004 when she was inspired by Micah Maritim and the late
Kipchamba to write and record songs.
The lady who winded up her studies in primary level narrates
her stumbling stones despite her hit song “ Le Achomin oo Benja”.
Her big plight is piracy, payment of royalties, Radio
stations and politicians who use and park them after campaigns
“ We are even not bothered by little payment they give us
but we have asked them to legislate policies that can help us but they are
still adamant. Now we are entertaining thousands of people but most of us
cannot afford to raise their families” she said.
The co-founder of the Kalenjin Musicians Association
appreciates Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto saying he is the only leader who has
granted them funds to purchase Public Address system which has helped all the
members.
The humble and focused lady told us that she doubles singing with farming of maize
and potatoes in Chepseon and Kuresoi which has enabled her educate her only
child in studying at a Nakuru school
She however says her hits are coming soon and asks her fans
to keep on waiting.
